Shed Kits – Warning! Don’t Get Ripped Off, Find a 6 X 10 Shed Kit That’s Right For You

By George Peck

So you’ve decided you could do with a shed for your storage needs, and you think the easiest way to go is to purchase a shed kit. What could be easier than buying a box with everything you need to assemble a shed? You are right – shed kits do offer easy solutions for storage shed plans, but Warning! Don’t get ripped off.

As with everything, there are good and bad shed kits. A good kit will provide you with a fun DIY experience, and a shed that is value for money, and will give you years of good use. A bad shed kit, on the other hand, will create more problems for you than just wasting your time and money. Know what to look for, so you don’t get ripped off, and you find the kit that’s right for you.

Before you even begin to look for shed kits, think about your needs. How much space do you have, how big do you want your shed to be, what do you want to use your shed for? Is your shed only going to be used for storage, or will you use it as a work space too? If you are going to be working in it, then you will need windows – both for ventilation and light. If you are just going to be using it for storage, windows may be unnecessary and create a security risk. Armed with this knowledge you can start making storage shed plans, and ensure that you find the shed kit that’s right for you.

There are many companies – some of them are reputable, and some will rip you off. Know what to look for. A big red flag is a company sells a 6 X 10 shed kit much cheaper than the competition. While there are many great deals around, particularly cut-rate shed kits are more likely than not going to be a compromise in quality, and rip you off. If the price seems too good to be true, then Warning! It probably is. And a shed made with poor quality materials is not going to last very long, and won’t be weatherproof. A shed should be durable, and built to last – so don’t take any short-cuts on quality, or you will end up spending more money over the long haul.

Also watch out for your local building regulations, and make sure your storage shed plans are approved. Just because the shed comes in a kit, doesn’t mean you are necessarily allowed to erect it. Check with your local authorities, and make sure you have all the relevant permission. Not all manufacturers will tell you this, and at the end of the day, the extra costs will be for your account, not theirs. A company that does not tell you this should send a warning to you!

When you look at shed kits, bear in mind that not all are created equal. Some come with absolutely everything; include all the wood pre-cut, and all the hardware you will need to assemble them. Others come with a long list of things that you will have to purchase in order to finish the shed. Here’s a Big Warning! You will have to ensure that the shed has a good, solid foundation – shed kits cannot provide you with this. Reputable manufacturers will tell you this, so factor this into your storage shed plans.

Another important consideration is the reputation of the company manufacturing the shed kit. Do they have an online presence, and if so, do they have customer reviews? How much support and advice will they give you? What kind of guarantees do they offer? A company that does not give good customer service is much more likely to rip you off. Look for the warning signs when you consider your storage shed plans, and you will find shed kits that’s right for you without getting ripped off.
